UBC Finance Club Overview »

The primary objective of the board of advisors is to help set the strategic direction of the UBC Finance Club. Board members also take an active role in bridging the finance club and the financial services industry through providing insight and connections into the industry. With the foresight and guidance of the board of advisors, the UBC Finance Club will stay ahead of the curve in an ever changing world in connecting the right students with the best in the finance industry.

The board of the UBC Finance Club stem from backgrounds in investment banking, venture capital, private equity, sales and trading and wealth management.

Praveen Varshney has 20 years of experience in entrepreneurship and the capital markets. He is a past president of the Vancouver chapter of The Entrepreneur’s Organization (EO) and a founding director of the Vancouver chapter of The IndUS Entrepreneurs (TIE). Mr. Varshney also is on UBC President Stephen Toope’s Strategic Advisory Council, a former Director of the Vancouver Board of Trade, and a past recipient of Business in Vancouver’s Forty under 40 Awards. Praveen Varshney is a general partner with Vancouver-based venture capital firm, Varshney Capital, as well as a director and past CFO of start-up and public companies. They include Carmanah Technologies Corp. [CMH-TSX], a solar power lighting products company, Canada Zinc Metals Corp. [CZX: TSX], and Mogo.ca, Canada’s largest online unsecured consumer lending company.

Peter Wong has 24 years of experience in financial advisory. Born and raised in Vancouver, Peter is recognized for his continuing leadership in the community. He has served on a number of boards including the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada Merit Scholarship Foundation and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden. A dragon boat enthusiast, Peter has been involved with the Dragon Boat Festival since its original inception over 25 years ago, and he now serves on the board of directors as Vice-Chair. He also represents the Alzheimer Society BC as a “Leader of Hope” member.

Ryan Fan re-joined CIBC’s office in Vancouver in 2005 as Managing Director of Institutional Equity Trading. He is responsible for wholesale banking’s capital markets trading and equity markets businesses in Vancouver. Mr. Fan began his career at Nesbitt Burns in investment banking. From there, he moved to CIBC where he worked as a proprietary equity and equity derivatives trader. In 2002, Mr.Fan moved to UBS as a cash equities trader, where he focused on both agency and liability trading, specifically with precious metals, financials, utilities and merger arbitrage. Mr. Fan earned his CFA designation in 2000 and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia.
